Frans, suffering pancreatic cancer, had been moved from Robina Hospital to the Gold Coast University Hospital for the reunion.
Speaking shortly after the reunion, Mr Kilian said he was feeling a mixture of emotions.
“I’m feeling relieved, happy and overwhelmed. It feels surreal.
“We didn’t have anyone else with us, so I haven’t seen my mother,” he said.
“We had to keep changing masks and we were only allowed to touch him with gloves on.
“We couldn’t hug or kiss him because there were a lot of protocols in place but I’m just so grateful we could see him.
“There were a lot of logistics involved and the length these people went to make this happen is extraordinary, and we are very thankful to everyone.
“It’s been amazing.”
Mr Kilian said the last time he saw his father in person was in January, when Frans had chemotherapy.
“This is the first time seeing him in real life since then and he’s not well. It’s a shock to see him like this,” he said.
“But we saw him, and we’re very thankful.
“I asked him, ‘If you could visit any city that you’ve been to in your life again, which city would that be?’
“He said, ‘Florence, Italy’.”
Mr Kilian said they would return to the hospital on Saturday and Monday. No visits would be allowed on Sunday.
“We will leave quarantine on Tuesday, so we will be spending as much time with him as we can once we’re free,” he said.
